Removing a Legacy: Part 1

Written by Andrew Eddie

Joomla! 1.5 provides a "Legacy Mode" to allow most developers a way to get up-and-running easily. However, you really want to get off the dependence on Legacy Mode as soon as you can.

  1. I'm really happy I found this article! I got stuck on a "Call to a member function setQuery() on a non-object" error message and I'm not a true PHP programmer... changing the "global $database" caused 'instant happiness' ;-) Thanx for writing this and the other info!
  2. Are there any drawbacks to enabling legacy to get a module installed, then disabling it shortly thereafter? I only ask, as MyBlog says its modules are "native 1.5," but require legacy mode to install...seems lazy to me, as the installers should be updated, then. I just hate to flip the switch, switch it back, only to run into problems down the road. Friends don't let friends drive legacy.
  3. Very good tutorial!
  4. Great article. Great site. Thanks... :)
  5. Hey Andrew - fantastic start, these little tips are going to save loads of people lots of time - keep it up!
  6. Here here for the site and also for GroupJive working with RokACL. I'm sure there's developers of other extensions that could use a basis for groups too when RokACL is finished (hint hint). Cheers, Adrian
  7. Hi Andrew: Now I can work on some extensions to run my site in native 1.5 mode. Let see how it goes. In the mid time, will wait for Part II of this series. Thank you very much!! Edfel
  8. Yay! this is a great article. Can't wait for part 2.
  9. Andrew, Thanks! I was *very pleasantly* surprised to find this site. Grateful to you for your willingness to provide information and help Joomla users/developers/designers in a free (OpenSource) format. Appreciate all you've done BTW for CMS in OpenSource. Will watch this article series and look forward to applying your insights here http://www.groupjive.org which we currently run in Legacy. Also (on our wishlist)... we are looking forward very much like to making the same com_ compatible with RokACL when the time comes. So, will check in every once in a while for news on RokACL as well (hint hint). Best to you sir. Thanks Chief, wwvine
